Detroit 67, USF 57: Juwan Howard Jr. tallied 13 of his 16 points in the second half as the host Titans downed the Bulls.
Anton Wilson scored 15 points – all on 3-pointers – for Detroit (6-3), which will host No. 10 Wichita State next Saturday. The Titans defeated the Bulls for the second time in as many seasons on the strength of 10 steals and 10-of-21 shooting from beyond the arc.
Corey Allen Jr. finished 10-of-15 from the field and led all scorers with 26 points for USF (5-3), which has dropped two straight after getting off to its best start since 2009-10. The Bulls shot a season-worst 41.7 percent and were held to their lowest point total of the season.
Allen scored 13 of USF’s first 25 points and hit a jumper with 6:19 left in the opening half before Wilson drilled two 3-pointers during a half-ending 13-3 spurt that ended with Carlton Brundidge’s triple at the buzzer. Allen continued to keep the Bulls around early in the second, offsetting two early second-half triples from Detroit with two of his own as USF trailed 43-40 with 13:57 left.
The Titans scored the next five points to match their biggest lead before Allen ended another field-goal drought of nearly five minutes with a jumper and drained his fourth 3-pointer with six minutes left to close the gap to 54-53. However, Howard countered with seven points down the stretch and the Titans refused to give up the lead, holding the Bulls to a pair of free throws over the final 4:19.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Allen is scoring 22.3 points over his last four games after averaging 12 over his first four. … Detroit, which entered the day ranked 22nd in Division I with 9.4 steals, has tallied at least eight steals in all but one game. … The Titans forced 17 turnovers, including at least two by all five Bulls starters.
