No. 6 Virginia 74, VCU 57: Justin Anderson produced 21 points and eight rebounds and the visiting Cavaliers shot 68.3 percent - second best in school history - to take the battle of Virginia over the Rams.
Anderson, who was questionable to play due to an injury to his left ankle, made 6-of-7 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and all six free throws for Virginia (9-0). Anthony Gill supplied 18 points and eight rebounds and Malcolm Brogdon added 15 points for the Cavaliers.
Treveon Graham poured in 17 points and was 5-of-9 from 3-point range for VCU (5-3). Melvin Johnson recorded 15 points, Jordan Burgess added nine and Mo Alie-Cox had eight for the Rams.
Despite turning the ball over nine times in the first half, Virginia was able to break the VCU press and score easy baskets, including six dunks. One of those dunks by Anderson with 3:15 left gave the Cavaliers a 33-26 lead. A Brogdon jumper capped the scoring in the first half, sending Virginia to the locker room with a 38-28 advantage.
Virginia maintained a lead in the neighborhood of 10 points deep into the second half before VCU made a run beginning with nine minutes left. Graham hit three straight 3-pointers to get the Rams to within 59-55, but the Cavaliers responded with 3-pointers by Evan Nolte and Anderson and closed the game on a 15-2 run.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Led by Anderson, who was 4-of-4 from both the field and the foul line, the Cavaliers made 14-of-22 and had 10 assists in the first half. ... The Cavaliers enjoyed a 35-21 edge in rebounding despite coming up with just five offensive boards ... Darion Atkins, who averages 6.1 points and 5.9 rebounds, did not play for Virginia due to a back injury suffered against Maryland.
