Iowa 77, Maryland-Baltimore County 47: Peter Jok and Gabriel Olaseni each scored 15 points off the bench as the host Hawkeyes overwhelmed the Retrievers to win their fifth consecutive game.
Jok matched his career high in points while draining a personal best 4-for-6 from 3-point range while Olaseni also reached his career high in scoring for Iowa (7-2). Aaron White scored 14 points for the Hawkeyes, who continued the momentum from their 60-55 road victory over No. 12 North Carolina in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge by dominating UMBC.
Cody Joyce led the Retrievers (0-8) with nine points and was the lone starter to shoot over 50 percent from the field (4-for-7). UMBC, which shot 19-for-57 overall, has lost 13 consecutive games dating back to last season.
The game was knotted at 6-6 when Iowa went on a 20-3 tear in which Jok scored nine points. The Hawkeyes led 31-14 when they closed out the final 5:37 by outscoring the Retrievers 17-6 to take a 48-20 halftime lead.
Iowa continued its tight-fisted defensive play by holding UMBC to 9-of-27 shooting with 15 turnovers in the first half. The Hawkeyes were also efficient on offense and shot 18-for-33 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Iowa F Jarrod Uthoff, who finished with 11 points, started the season shooting 11-for-20 from long range through the first four games, but is 5-of-21 over the last four games. … One statistic the Retrievers came out on top was rebounding: 41-37. … Iowa G Mike Gesell had six of his seven assists in the first half.
