California 72, Cal Poly 52: Tyrone Wallace recorded 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the host Golden Bears pulled away from the pesky Mustangs.
Jabari Bird scored 18 points and Jordan Mathews added 17 for California (4-1), which led by three with 12:37 left before taking control with a 17-5 run. David Kravish registered nine points and six rebounds and Christian Behrens added eight and nine to help the Golden Bears win the battle of the boards 44-27.
Brian Bennett recorded 16 points and six rebounds for Cal Poly (2-2), which had its two-game winning streak snapped after shooting 4-of-16 from the field in the final 14 minutes. David Nwaba added 14 points and five rebounds for the Mustangs.
Wallace, Mathews and Kravish scored seven points apiece while Bird added six as Cal shot 50 percent from the field en route to a 31-24 lead at the break. Cal Poly got to within four on Nwaba's emphatic dunk following Maliik Love's miss less than four minutes into the second half and within three twice on Love layups.
The Mustangs trimmed their deficit twice more to three before Wallace bookended an 8-2 run with a layup and a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 48-39 advantage with 9:16 left. Back-to-back dunks by Behrens pushed Cal's advantage to 52-41 with 8:05 left and the lead grew to as high as 22.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bird was 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range while Wallace was 7-of-13 from the floor. ... The Golden Bears have 88 assists in four games compared to 36 for their opponents. ... The teams committed only 12 turnovers as the Mustangs entered the game with the fewest turnovers in the country (19) and added five to that total to lower their average to six per game.
