No. 24 West Virginia 103, Virginia Military Institute 72: Freshman Jevon Carter scored 20 of his career-high 28 points in the first half as the Mountaineers routed the visiting Keydets.

Juwan Staten scored 17 points while Jonathan Holton had 13 points and seven rebounds for West Virginia (6-0), which closed the first half on a 13-2 run and led by 18 at the half. Daxter Miles Jr. and Tarik Phillip scored 12 points apiece as the Mountaineers forced a school-record 36 turnovers and improved to 44-5 all-time against VMI.

QJ Peterson led VMI (2-3) with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists while Craig Hinton battled foul trouble and registered 10 points. Tim Marshall, Trey Chapman and Phillip Anglade each scored eight points for the Keydets, who crumbled under West Virginia’s press and never threatened in the second half.

VMI, which came in averaging 16.3 turnovers, committed 19 in the first half and trailed 53-35 at the break. Carter made his final seven shots of the first half and was 8-of-10 shooting in the opening period, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.

Carter, who set his previous career high of 15 on Friday against Boston College, finished 12-of-14 from the field and recorded five steals. The Mountaineers made 10 of their first 12 shots in the second half and led 75-48 with just under 15 minutes left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: West Virginia is off to its first 6-0 start since 2009-10, when the Mountaineers won their first 11 games. … West Virginia coach Bob Huggins tied Phog Allen for 15th place on the NCAA Division I all-time wins list with 746. … The Mountaineers tied the school record for steals with 26.
