Jahmir Young posted 20 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead host Maryland to a 68-54 upset win over No. 3 Purdue on Thursday night in College Park, Md.
The Terrapins (18-8, 9-6 Big Ten) blew past Purdue with an extended 29-4 stretch in the second half. They won their second in a row and picked up another NCAA Tournament resume-boosting victory after nearly knocking off the Boilermakers on the road on Jan. 22.
Purdue (23-4, 12-4) lost for the third time in four games and again watched an opposing fan base rush the court in celebration as its grip on a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament continued to weaken.
Zach Edey and Braden Smith each scored 18 points to lead the Boilermakers. Edey finished with eight rebounds. But the momentum of the game shifted dramatically early in the second half on a call that involved neither of them.
Purdue led 37-29 four minutes into the second half before Mason Gillis was called for a foul and then charged with a technical for yelling at an official.
The Terrapins capitalized with a 10-0 run and took the lead on Julian Reese's layup with 13:46 left. It would swell to 29-4 over nine-plus minutes as Purdue went cold from the field, shooting 1-for-11 over that stretch. Hakim Hart's 3-pointer with 7:15 to go capped the run and made it 58-41 Maryland.
Hart finished with 13 points and Reese totaled 10 points and nine rebounds.
Purdue shot just 2-for-13 from 3-point range and was unable to seize control of the game in the first half.
Maryland trailed by only three at the half despite shooting only 30.8 percent from the field.
The Boilermakers managed to limit their turnovers, which had been a problem in recent games. But despite committing only seven, rebounding continued to be the issue as Maryland beat Purdue on the glass 35-23 and 10-3 in offensive rebounds.
