Longwood came out firing but Georgetown withstood an early barrage and then held the Lancers off late as Collin Holloway more than tripled his career high with 23 points in a 91-83 victory Tuesday night in Washington, D.C.
Georgetown (3-3) trailed by nine points early in the game but surged to the lead late in the first half and held it the rest of the way. There were some anxious moments in the second half for the Hoyas, however, as they saw a 14-point lead shrink to one.
But Kaiden Rice (15 points) hit the biggest of his five 3-pointers with 24 seconds left to seal the win. Aminu Mohammed added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Dante Harris contributed 14 points, while Donald Carey chipped in with 12.
Longwood (4-4), which played without top scorer Leslie Nkereuwem (knee injury), was led by DeShaun Wade's 21 points. Wake Forest transfer Isaiah Wilkins added 14 points and seven rebounds. Justin Hill added 13 points.
The Lancers were down 56-42 with 14 minutes left, but they scored the next 13 points. Hill triggered the surge with a 3-point play and Jordan Perkins scrambled for a pair of fast-break baskets as Longwood pulled to within a point.
It stayed close the rest of the way, but the Hoyas remained efficient at the offensive end as they scored 24 points over the final 6:06 to remain in charge. Holloway, whose previous career high was seven points, had six of the points down the stretch.
Longwood of the Big South got 3-pointers from three players in the opening minutes to grab a 9-0 lead. Later, a pair of 3-pointers by Wade still had Longwood in command, 24-18.
But over the final six minutes of the half, Georgetown outscored Longwood 18-7. Mohammed gave the Hoyas their first lead when he made a backcourt steal and made a layup. Timothy Ighoefe then scored six straight points for the Hoyas.
