Ryan Young had 18 points and eight rebounds in his first start of the season and Northwestern upset No. 10 Michigan State 64-62 in East Lansing, Mich. on Saturday.
Chase Audige supplied 14 points and seven rebounds as the Wildcats (9-6, 2-4 Big Ten) snapped a four-game losing streak while ending the Spartans' nine-game winning streak. Boo Buie added 12 points and four assists.
Julius Marble had a career-high 18 points for the Spartans (14-3, 5-1), Malik Hall and Gabe Brown added 10 points apiece but Michigan State had 17 turnovers and allowed 16 second-chance points.
The Spartans committed 12 first-half turnovers and trailed 38-33 at halftime. Audige and Buie combined for 17 points to lead the Wildcats.
Northwestern jumped out to a 12-4 lead during the first six minutes. Michigan State came back and took a 19-15 lead with 8:30 left in the half, but the miscues continued to pile up.
Audige made a 3-pointer after a Spartans turnover to put Northwestern back on top, 21-19. Michigan State briefly regained the lead on two Marble free throws with 2:37 left, but the Wildcats finished the half on a 7-1 run that included a Buie 3-pointer.
Audige's fast break layup after another Michigan State turnover gave Northwestern a 46-39 advantage five minutes into the second half.
The Wildcats then went scoreless for over five minutes during a Spartans 11-0 run, which included two baskets by Marble.
Northwestern regained the lead on Young's three-point play with 8:24 remaining. An Audige 3-pointer gave Northwestern a 57-52 lead.
Young's three-point play with 2:43 remaining made it 62-56. Michigan State battled back and Marble hit two free throws with 59 seconds left to cut Northwestern's lead to 64-62.
Hall missed a 3-point try in the closing seconds, but Northwestern was called for traveling on the rebound. Marcus Bingham was then fouled with 0.7 seconds left but missed the front end of a one-and-one.
