Jase Febres scored a game-high 17 points and Texas' defense stifled punchless Texas A&M in a 60-50 nonconference win on Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas.
Andrew Jones added 12 for the Longhorns (8-1), but the story was what their defense did to the Aggies. A&M (3-5) came into the game as one of the worst offensive teams in Division I and did nothing to improve those numbers.
The Aggies shot around 40 percent for most of the game until a late spurt boosted them to 47.6 percent, and they committed a whopping 21 turnovers that led to 22 points. That negated a 30-24 rebounding advantage.
Josh Nebo scored 16 points for A&M, while Emanuel Miller hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds. But the rebuilding Aggies couldn't cope with Texas' pressure defense and never got closer than six points in the second half, unable to maintain ball control with any kind of consistency.
Jones' transition dunk with 2:43 left upped the margin to 56-40, sealing the outcome.
The rims got quite a workout early in the second game ever played at Dickies Arena, which opened for business a month ago. Texas led only 4-2 with more than five minutes elapsed. Gerald Liddell's layup made it 11-5 Longhorns at the second TV timeout, nearly 8 1/2 minutes into the game.
Savion Flagg drilled a 3-pointer with 7:45 left in the half to draw Texas A&M within 14-11, but that was as close as the Aggies would get for the rest of the game. Texas slowly extended its lead for the rest of the first half, pushing it to 24-15 when Liddell dunked in transition at the 1:52 mark.
A&M got a dunk from Nebo with 12 seconds remaining that enabled it to head for the locker room trailing 27-17. It got off just 18 field goal attempts in the half, turning it over 11 times. The Longhorns made only 37.9 percent of their shots in the half.
