Propelled by a 17-point run in the first half, Radford upset Northwestern 67-56 on Tuesday night in Evanston, Ill.

Guard Carlik Jones led the Highlanders (2-2) with 20 points and seven assists, and he added four rebounds. Travis Fields had 15 points and six assists.

The Wildcats (1-2) were led by forward Pete Nance, who scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, and had 10 rebounds. Miller Kopp had 13 points on 6-for-15 shooting.

Northwestern started the game hot with 12-4 run over the first four minutes, sparked by seven points by graduate guard Pat Spencer. But then Radford took over.

The Highlanders scored 17 unanswered points over the next 11-plus minutes. Six different players scored for Radford, with back-to-back 3-pointers from Jones highlighting the run.

The Wildcats hit a pair of free throws to break the slump, but the Highlanders kept scoring. Radford entered the half up 31-17 after Northwestern hit only one field goal in the final 16 minutes.

For the first half, the Wildcats were 6 of 26 (23.1 percent) from the field and 2-for-11 from beyond the arc.

Nance and Northwestern teammate Ryan Young opened the second half with buckets, but then the Highlanders took over yet again. Radford pushed the lead to 21 points with about 12 minutes remaining.

The Wildcats started fighting back, but the Highlanders kept hold of their lead.

Northwestern went on a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to eight points with 80 seconds left, but it was too little, too late for the hosts. The Highlanders made their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Wildcats' start to the season has been chaotic. Northwestern lost to Merrimack, playing in only its second Division I game ever, in the season opener before defeating a solid Providence in its second game.
