Forward Aaron Ross scored 13 points and forward Zach Smith added 11 points and 11 rebounds as Texas Tech used dominating runs at the start of both halves to roll past North Texas 70-43 Tuesday at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.
Texas Tech (2-0) cruised to a 20-point lead midway through the second half and built the advantage to 25 in the final minutes, thanks mostly to North Texas' woeful shooting (30.9 percent from the floor, including just 4 of 24 from 3-point range).
The Mean Green (1-1) went the final 6:03 without a field goal, and Texas Tech put the capper on a dominating win with a 12-1 run over the last 4:51.
Eleven players participated for the Red Raiders, and 10 of them scored.
North Texas was led by guard Deckie Johnson's 13 points, while guard A.J. Johnson added 10 points for the Mean Green.
Texas Tech led by as much as 16 points in the first half before settling for a 37-24 edge at intermission. Livingston paced the Red Raiders with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting in just 13 minutes as Texas Tech outshot the Mean Green 44 percent to 40 percent and outrebounded the visitors 21-17 before the break.
The Red Raiders established themselves in the early going, outscoring North Texas 12-2 in the first six minutes. The Mean Green, which never led, missed four of their five free throws in the half and committed 11 turnovers.
Things didn't go much better for North Texas in the first six minutes of the second half. The Mean Green missed their first seven shots -- six of them from beyond the 3-point arc -- as Texas Tech built its lead to 42-24 and rolled to the win.
