Mississippi's Deandre Burnett scored 41 points and the Rebels outlasted Oral Roberts 95-88 in overtime in the first round of the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Friday.
Terence Davis had 13 points off the bench for the Rebels, who managed 10 steals. Sebastian Saiz and Rasheed Brooks had 11 points apiece for Ole Miss (3-0).
Burnett sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 32 second left. In the extra period, the Rebels took an 82-79 lead on a 3-pointer by Brooks and never trailed again.
Oral Roberts junior Albert Owens, the team's top returning scorer, rebounder and shot blocker, finished with 22 points, while freshman Emmanuel Nzekwesi scored 20 and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kris Martin added 15 points and Jalen Bradley had 12 for the Golden Eagles (1-2)
After a back-and-forth first-half, Burnett capped an 8-0 run with a 3-pointer, and Ole Miss led 37-34 at the break. Burnett also scored a game-high 23 points in his Rebels' debut against Tennessee-Martin, which was the most points by a Mississippi player in his program debut since Johnny Neumann scored 41 points in 1971.
The Golden Eagles, however, adjusted and took the lead 42-41 on a pair of free throws by Martin with 17:46 left in the game. Oral Roberts stayed in control until Burnett provided Ole Miss with a 68-65 lead on a 3-pointer with 5:16 left.
The Golden Eagles rallied again and led 74-72 on two free throws by Aaron Young. However, Burnett eventually tied the game 79-79 with another 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
Ole Miss improved to 5-0 all-time against Oral Roberts.
