Despite blowing a 13-point lead in the second half, junior guard Justin Robinson scored a team-high 14 points as Monmouth survived Rutgers, 73-67 in Piscataway, N.J.
Monmouth (8-3) led 61-48 with 8:34 remaining before Rutgers (4-7) sparked a 17-4 run to tie the game with 2:17 to play. Junior center Chris Brady's putback with 59 seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the Hawks, who finished the game with six unanswered points.
Monmouth took control of the game with a 37-31 halftime lead after Robinson scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half. After the Scarlet Knights came within two points with 16:31 left in the second half, the Hawks went on a 14-2 spurt to take a 13-point lead midway through the second half.
For Rutgers, freshman guard Corey Sanders scored a game-high 16 points while sophomore guard Mike Williams added 15 points in the losing effort.
The win marked Monmouth's fifth victory over a power conference foe this season, defeating UCLA, Notre Dame, USC and Georgetown earlier in the year. The Hawks will travel to Cornell on Wednesday, while Rutgers will stay at home on Wednesday to face Fairleigh Dickinson.
