No. 4 Virginia 58, Florida State 44: Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey each recorded 11 points as the Cavaliers held off a second-half rally to beat the Seminoles in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Malcolm Brogdon scored all 10 of his points in the second half for top-seeded Virginia (29-2), which will play No. 5 seed North Carolina in Friday’s semifinals. Anthony Gill contributed nine points, seven rebounds and three steals while London Perrantes dished out nine assists as the Cavaliers won for the 10th time in 11 games.
Freshman Xavier Rathan-Mayes followed up his 30-point performance in the second round with 13 to lead Florida State (17-16). Phil Cofer and Devon Bookert added nine points each for the Seminoles, who shot 32.6 percent from the field overall despite pulling within five midway through the second half after trailing by 17 at halftime.
Nolte drained two 3-pointers and Darion Atkins scored six as Virginia made its first six shots en route to a 16-2 lead and shot 63.2 percent overall in the first half for a 34-17 edge at the break. The Cavaliers started the second half cold as Florida State crept back in it and Phil Cofer’s dunk with 10:23 to go cut the deficit to 39-34.
The teams traded five-point runs before Tobey’s dunk and two Brogdon free throws, following a technical on Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton, pushed the lead to 48-39. Florida State pulled within six, but Brogdon nailed two free throws and a jumper to increase the lead to 52-42 and Virginia had the cushion it needed.
GAME NOTEBOOK: G Justin Anderson, Virginia’s second-leading scorer, returned after missing the last eight games with a fractured finger and an appendectomy, but did not score in 12 minutes. … Florida State managed to make only three of its 17 attempts from 3-point range. … The Cavaliers, who kept pace with their 1981-82 team for the best start in program history, has beaten Florida State in five straight contests and leads the all-time series 23-22.
