Green Bay 68, No. 15 Miami (Fla.) 55: Carrington Love hit
career highs with 20 points and nine rebounds as the visiting Phoenix handed
the Hurricanes their first loss.
Keifer Sykes added 18 points and Greg Mays had
10 for Green Bay (6-2), which bounced back quickly from Thursday’s 72-48
loss at Georgia State to notch its first win in three road games this season. Kenneth
Lowe chipped in eight points and Jordan Fouse had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Phoenix, who outrebounded the hosts 46-37.
Freshman Deandre Burnett scored a career-high 20
off the bench and Sheldon McClellan added 16 for Miami (8-1), which came into
the contest averaging 76 points per game. Joe Thomas had a career-high 13
rebounds, but second-leading scorer Angel Rodriguez hit only 2-of-15 shots and
finished with 12 points for the Hurricanes, who shot a season-worst 32.8
percent from the floor, including 5-of-20 from 3-point range.
Miami was within 31-30 almost five minutes into
the second half, but Love and Sykes combined for 11 points to spark a 17-4
Phoenix run over the next seven minutes as the visitors took a 48-34 lead. Thanks
to eight points from Burnett, the Hurricanes pulled to within 48-43 with a 9-0
burst, but Green Bay scored the next four points and Miami got no closer
than seven the rest of the way.
Miami took an early 4-0 lead, but the visitors
dominated with a 22-7 run over the ensuing 10 minutes to take a 22-11 lead. Miami,
however, regrouped to outscore the Phoenix 12-3 over the final seven minutes of
the half to pull within 25-23 at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami had scored at least 66
points and shot better than 43.9 percent from the floor in each of its first
seven games. … All of Rodriguez’s 12 points came in the second half. … Four of
Green Bay’s six wins have come in Florida with the Phoenix winning three games
in three days to win the Gulf Coast Showcase title last month in Estero.
