Saint Mary’s 71, Creighton 67 (OT): Aaron Bright scored 22 points and Dane Pineau converted the go-ahead basket in the extra session as the Gaels halted the Bluejays’ 24-game home winning streak.
Kerry Carter scored 19 points and made five 3-pointers before fouling out for Saint Mary’s (6-1). Pineau contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds and Brad Waldow had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Austin Chatman scored 19 points and Isaiah Zierden added 17 for Creighton (8-3). Devin Brooks added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bluejays.
Waldow’s jumper and a three-pointer by Bright gave Saint Mary’s a 55-53 lead with 3:42 remaining in regulation and Creighton inched ahead on Zierden’s 3-pointer before Bright banked in a floater to tie it at 61 with 1:02 remaining. Toby Hegner’s 3-pointer gave the Bluejays a 64-62 lead in overtime before back-to-back baskets by Pineau put the Gaels ahead, Bright added a jumper and Waldow hit two free throws to make it a six-point margin with 32.6 seconds left.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Chatman helped Creighton take a 13-5 lead less than nine minutes into the game but Carter got Saint Mary’s back in the game with three 3-pointers and a layup in an 11-2 surge and the contest was tied at 27 at the break. Zierden hit two 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that gave Creighton a 37-29 lead with 14:41 left in the contest before the Gaels answered with 13 consecutive points for a five-point lead with 9:07 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Creighton’s record for consecutive home wins is 28, achieved twice. … Carter had four of Saint Mary’s nine steals. … Bluejays G James Milliken was late for the shootaround and was held out for the first half before playing in the second.
