No. 20 Maryland 67, USC Upstate 57: Jake Layman scored 16 of his 17 points in the second half as the Terrapins rallied to defeat the visiting Spartans.
Freshman guard Melo Trimble contributed his first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for Maryland (10-1). Evan Smotrycz returned after missing the last three games with a recurring foot injury to add 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Terps, who shot 65 percent from the field in the second half.
Fred Miller registered 13 points and five assists while Michael Buchanan chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds for USC Upstate (8-3). Ty Greene, the Spartans’ leading scorer at 16.4 coming in, was held to 11 points on 5-of-13 shooting – 1-of-5 from beyond the 3-point line.
Maryland led by seven in the opening minutes, but Buchanan scored seven as USC Upstate ran off 16 of 21 points in the middle of the half to take the lead and had a 28-24 edge at intermission. The Terps trailed by seven early in the second half before Layman capped 12-2 burst with a dunk and a layup.
After a basket by Greene, Smotrycz scored five points, including a 3-pointer, and Layman added four as Maryland recorded 11 of the next 15 to push its lead to 49-39 with 9:15 remaining. Miller’s 3-pointer pulled the Spartans within 61-57 before Layman answered from behind the arc with 1:34 to go and Trimble made three free throws to seal it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland came into the game leading the nation in made free throws with 197 and converted 17-of-23 from the line Saturday. … The Terrapins forced eight turnovers in the second half after USC Upstate did not cough the ball up once in the opening 20 minutes. … The Spartans are 0-5 all time against Big Ten opponents.
