SMU 72, Texas Southern 59: Nic Moore scored 17 points and plucked away seven steals to lead the host Mustangs over the Tigers.
Keith Frazier added 16 points and Yanick Moreira totaled 15 to go with a game-high seven rebounds for SMU (3-3), which rebounded after a 78-72 loss to Arkansas on Tuesday night. Cannen Cunningham and Ben Moore added eight points apiece for the Mustangs, who shot 51.9 percent from the field.
Madarious Gibbs led the offense for Texas Southern (0-5), scoring 16 points while dishing out nine assists. Deverell Biggs and Chris Thomas contributed 11 points each, while Malcolm Riley collected 10 for the Tigers, who committed 19 turnovers while handing out 15 assists.
Nevin Johnson's 3-pointer with 10:09 left in the first half brought the Tigers to within 14-13 but seemed to awaken the Mustangs. Cunningham answered with a layup to spark a 16-2 run that included five points from Moreira, giving SMU a 30-15 advantage en route to a 32-25 edge at the break.
In the second half, Texas Southern pulled to within 39-31 on a jumper from Gibbs before a 15-5 surge, led by six points from Frazier, gave the Mustangs full control. Consecutive 3-pointers from Gibbs and Thomas got the Tigers within 57-42, but Texas Southern would never get closer as SMU cruised down the stretch.
GAME NOTEBOOK: SMU has won 21 of its last 23 games at home. ... Texas Southern came into the game allowing opponents to shoot 50 percent from 3-point range and the Mustangs fell right in line, knocking down 7-of-14 from behind the arc. ... Nic Moore notched six assists to push his season average to 5.7 -- second in the AAC to USF G Anthony Collins (7.4).
