Stanford 58, New Mexico 53: Chasson Randle scored 23 points to lead the Cardinal past the Lobos in Midwest regional play in St. Louis.

Anthony Brown and Stefan Nastic added 10 points apiece for 10th-seeded Stanford (22-12), which advances to face Kansas in Sunday’s round of 32. The Cardinal led by 16 points early in the game and held off New Mexico’s charge to post the program’s first NCAA tournament victory since 2008.

Cameron Bairstow had 24 points and eight rebounds for the seventh-seeded Lobos (27-7), who were eliminated in their first game for the second straight year after falling to 14th-seeded Harvard in 2013. Deshawn Delaney with 10 points was the only other player to reach double digits for New Mexico, which shot just 36.5 percent from the field.

The Lobos overcame early difficulties to catch Stanford at 45 on Cullen Neal’s basket with 10:07 remaining before scoring only two points over a near nine-minute span and missing 15 of their final 17 field-goal attempts. Despite the drought, New Mexico was within 54-52 after two free throws by Alex Kirk with 30.6 seconds left before Robbie Lemons and Randle each hit two free throws to make it a six-point margin.

Stanford made its first six shots over the opening four-plus minutes to open up a 12-point lead and scored 17 straight overall to hold a 20-4 advantage less than 6 1/2 minutes into the contest. The Cardinal led by 14 after a 3-pointer by Brown with 7:21 left in the half before New Mexico scored the final eight points to trail 32-27 at the break.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cardinal were 8-of-15 from 3-point range while New Mexico was just 4-of-21. … Lobos G Kendall Williams, a two-time first-team All-Mountain West selection, scored just three points on 1-of-9 shooting. … Brown (1,001) and F Josh Huestis (1,000) became the 41st and 42nd players in Stanford history to reach 1,000 career points.
