Syracuse (20-0, 7-0 ACC) overcame poor shooting all around - 36.2 percent from the field, 3-of-14 from 3-point range and 11 missed free throws - to open a season 20-0 for just the second time in school history. With Syracuse holding a 48-43 lead with less than eight minutes left, Ennis knocked down a jumper and Grant added a free throw to push the lead to eight. The Demon Deacons again got within five points twice down the stretch - at 52-47 and 54-49 - but Fair responded the first time with a layup and later with a pair of foul shots.

Syracuse led by as many as seven in the first half before settling for a 26-23 edge at intermission following McKie's 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the half. Fair scored nine first-half points, although the Orange's leading scorer finished just 4-of-14 from the field.
