No. 8 Louisville 71, Southern Methodist 63: Russ Smith scored 23 points and the Cardinals held off the visiting Mustangs in the first collegiate meeting between coaching legends Rick Pitino and Larry Brown.
Luke Hancock scored 19 of his 23 points after halftime and made four 3-pointers for Louisville (14-3, 3-1 American Athletic Conference), which was 10-for-23 from long range. Montrezl Harrell posted his second consecutive double-double, racking up 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Markus Kennedy led the Mustangs in both points (12) and rebounds (eight). SMU (11-4, 1-2 AAC) outrebounded the Cardinals 48-35 but committed 16 turnovers and shot 13-for-25 from the free-throw line.
Both teams got off to slow starts offensively, but five Smith points sandwiched by 3-pointers by Wayne Blackshear and Terry Rozier sent the Cardinals on an 11-2 run. Louisville led by as many as 17 in the opening half before five straight Mustangs points closed the gap to 37-25 at the break.
SMU closed the gap quickly after halftime, outscoring Louisville 15-5 to open the second frame, and remained within single digits throughout but could never close to within one possession again. Smith was shut out for the first 12 minutes of the half, but woke up late for eight points.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals G Chris Jones was slowed throughout the game by an apparent hip injury and scored only two points. … Louisville won despite 15 turnovers. … The Cardinals shot just 11-for-21 from the free-throw line.
