No. 22 Massachusetts 69, Eastern Michigan 57: Raphiael Putney had 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots as the Minutemen validated their new ranking with a quality road victory.
Cady Lalanne recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Trey Davis chipped in 13 points as Massachusetts won its first true road game of the season, one day after entering the Top 25. Chaz Williams, the second-leading scorer for the Minutemen (7-0), finished with 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting in Massachusetts' first game since Nov. 24.
Da'Shonte Riley had 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for Eastern Michigan (5-2), which finished with 11 blocks and now has 65 through seven games. Daylen Harrison and Karrington Ward each scored 11 points for the Eagles.
Putney hit a 3-pointer just before the first-half buzzer to bring Massachusetts within 35-31 at intermission and made another 3-pointer with 13:27 remaining in the second half to give the Minutemen the lead for good, 43-42. He finished 2-of-4 from 3-point range, while his teammates combined to make three of their 13 attempts from behind the arc.
UMass led 56-53 with under 4 1/2 minutes remaining when Sampson Carter's two free throws kickstarted a 13-4 game-ending run. Putney's dunk made it 62-55 with 2:46 to play and Davis' 3-pointer just under a minute later created a 10-point advantage that proved too much for Eastern Michigan to overcome.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Williams led UMass with eight assists - as many as the rest of his teammates combined. ... The Minutemen are 14-2 in their last 16 games in December. ... Aside from Davis, no other reserve scored for UMass, while Eastern Michigan received 16 points from its bench.
