: Kevin Foster registered 34 points and eight assists as the Broncos held off the host Boilermakers in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

Raymond Cowels III chipped in 13 points for Santa Clara (23-11), which beat Purdue for the first time ever. Marc Trasolini added 10 for the Broncos, who will play George Mason in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The Boilermakers (16-18) were paced by freshman Ronnie Johnson, who scored 27 and dished out six assists. His brother Terone added 22 points and D.J. Byrd finished with nine.

Purdue jumped out to a 37-33 lead by intermission, but a three-point play from Foster with 13:52 to go gave the Broncos a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Terone Johnson's three-point play pulled the Boilermakers within two with 19 seconds left, but he couldn't capitalize on a turnover, missing a potential game-tying jumper and desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Santa Clara committed 19 turnovers but shot 49.2 percent, including 9-of-22 from deep. The Boilermakers were just 1-of-11 from beyond the arc.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Foster moved into seventh place on the NCAA's all-time 3-pointers list with 413. … The Broncos were previously 0-4 against the Boilermakers. … Santa Clara beat a team from the Big Ten for the first time since 1995-96.
