No. 20 Syracuse 75, Seton Hall 63: James Southerland drained six 3-pointers and scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half as the Orange dug themselves out of an early hole to defeat the Pirates in the second round of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Brandon Triche poured in 17 points, C.J. Fair added 16 and Michael Carter-Williams matched the Big East tournament record with 14 assists for Syracuse (24-8). The Orange shot 56.3 percent from the field, including a season-high 60 percent beyond the arc, and will meet Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals.

Aaron Cosby led all scorers with 22 points for Seton Hall (15-18), which connected on 10 of its 20 3-point attempts.

Both teams, coming off poor offensive performances in their last games, shot at least 50 percent in the first half. The Pirates hit six of their first eight shots – including three 3-pointers from Kyle Smyth – to build a 16-6 advantage in the first 6:09 before Southerland took over with three 3-pointers to keep the Orange in the game.

Southerland drained his fifth 3-pointer during a 15-6 surge to close the first half and his final 3-pointer of the contest contributed to Syracuse’s 19-2 run after Seton Hall knotted the game at 46 with 13:44 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carter-Williams notched his 11th game with at least 10 assists and matched the record for assists in a tournament game held by St. John's Mark Jackson, Syracuse's Pearl Washington and Pittsburgh's Brandin Knight. … The game was tied at 34 at the half. Seton Hall didn’t reach 34 points in Tuesday’s 46-42 first-round overtime win against South Florida until 39 seconds remained in regulation while the Orange didn’t score their 34th until the 4:03 mark of Saturday’s 61-39 loss at Georgetown. … Seton Hall fell to 6-5 in games in which it hit at least 10 3-pointers.
