No. 13 Creighton 74, California 64: Doug McDermott scored a season-high 34 points, including four 3-pointers, as the visiting Bluejays held on for their fourth straight victory.
Jahenns Manigat had 11 points and Grant Gibbs added 10 for Creighton (10-1), which led by five at halftime and never trailed. Gregory Echenique had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Justin Cobbs scored 18 points for the Bears (6-3), who have lost three straight after opening the season with six consecutive wins. Allen Crabbe added 14 points after missing his first 12 shots and shooting 6-for-26 for the game. The Bears shot just 34.6 percent, including 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from 3-point range.
California cut the lead to 46-43 when Crabbe scored with 11:45 left before the Bluejays responded with three straight 3-pointers by McDermott, Gibbs and Manigat to lead by 12 just 90 seconds later. McDermott, who has scored 21 or more points in each of his last seven
games, grabbed nine rebounds and was 10-for-17 shooting while making
all 10 of his free throws.
California made its final charge when Cobbs scored to cut the lead to 68-64 with 1:47 remaining, but Creighton hit six straight free throws to secure the win. The Bears outrebounded the Bluejays 47-36.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Bears have lost seven straight in Berkeley to ranked opponents since beating No. 22 Washington 86-71 on Feb. 5, 2009. … California F David Kravish had a game-high 13 rebounds … The Bears fell to 31-5 in non-conference home games under coach Mike Montgomery.
