DaVonte Lacy hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left and host Washington State ended Pacific-12 leader California’s season-best winning streak at six games with a 77-75 victory Saturday.

Lacy broke a 74-74 tie before the Golden Bears (16-5, 6-2 Pac-12) saw Justin Cobbs make the first of two free throws, then miss the second. Cobbs rebounded the ball and got it to Cal’s team leader, guard Jorge Gutierrez, who missed a 3-point try at the buzzer.

Washington State (11-8, 3-4) got a team-best 24 points off the bench from guard Faisal Aden, and a great crunch-time performance from forward Brock Motum. Beginning with Cal holding a 60-53 lead with 9:24 to play, Motum scored 11 of Washington State’s final 24 points. He finished with 15 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.

California finished with all five starters in double figures, led by Gutierrez with 19, but the Bears only got four points from their bench.

Down by six at the half, Washington State came out and scored 11 of the half’s first 15 points to take a 47-44 lead. But just when the Cougars, 7-1 at home, seemed ready to take over, the Bears went on a 12-2 blitz, including dunks by Harper Kamp, Cobbs and Gutierrez to get the lead to 56-49.

Washington State had one more push in it, though, as Motum scored all the Cougars’ points in a 7-2 run that got the game close.

Although Cal led by six at the half, the first 20 minutes were a one-man show by Aden. He came off the bench to hit 7-of-8 shots for 16 points, almost half of his team’s total as the Bears led 40-34.

It was all Aden, though, as the rest of the team was 6-for-18 shooting in the half, including 3 for 12 by the starters.

The Golden Bears got 13 first-half points from Gutierrez, who was one of those who had trouble guarding Aden. Gutierrez wasn’t easy to defend, either, at one point scoring seven consecutive California points as the Bears went from a 20-18 to lead to being up 27-21.
