Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as No. 16 Michigan rolled to a 71-53 victory over visiting Penn State on Thursday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Hardaway, a sophomore guard, converted 11-of-18 field-goal attempts as the Wolverines (11-2) won their conference opener for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Michigan, which has won six straight since a 70-58 defeat at Virginia on Nov. 29, also improved to 8-0 at home.

The Wolverines took a 36-22 lead at halftime and quickly extended it to 18 after Hardaway scored the first six points of the second half. From there, they stretched the advantage to 54-32 with 13:52 left as Penn State sputtered offensively.

Penn State (8-6) shot only 39.6 percent from the field and failed to reach the 60-point mark for the sixth time this season. The Nittany Lions, who fell to 7-13 all-time in Big Ten openers, were led by Tim Frazier, who had a team-high 20 points.

Evan Smotrycz, who scored 16 or more points in each of his previous four games, finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Trey Burke added 13 points and seven assists for Michigan.

The Wolverines shot 46.3 percent from the field and had only eight turnovers.
