Kyle Weems, the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, had 31 points and seven rebounds as visiting Missouri State upset No. 19 Creighton 77-65 on Wednesday.
Anthony Downing added 26 points, including a dagger of a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring to put the Bears up 71-65 with just over a minute remaining.
Missouri State (8-5) defeated Creighton (10-2) for the sixth straight time despite trailing at the half in the last four meetings. Weems scored 25 after the break and hit three 3-pointers to give him 201 for his career, becoming only the fourth player in school history to make more than 200.
Creighton’s Doug McDermott failed to score more than 20 points for the first time in 11 games and the Bluejays were held to less than 70 points for the first time this season. McDermott, who came in tied for the national scoring lead, had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Creighton led 34-32 at halftime behind 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. The Bluejays were paced in the first half by eight points from senior Antoine Young and junior reserve, Josh Jones. Creighton used a 16-2 run midway through the period to take a 24-16 lead.
Missouri State held McDermott to six points in the first 20 minutes, denying him the ball and double- and triple-teaming him whenever he touched the ball around the hoop.
Young finished with 13 points for Creighton, but shot only 3-of-13 from the field. Jones finished with 11 points.
This was Creighton’s first home loss as a ranked team since 1975.
