Reserve forward James Southerland scored nine of his 19 points from 3-point range to lead Syracuse to an 84-48 victory over visiting Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.

Syracuse (7-0) evened the all-time series with Eastern Michigan 1-1 after losing to the Eagles at home in 1996.

Eastern Michigan (4-3) couldn’t give coach Rob Murphy, a former Syracuse assistant, a happy homecoming, and lost its second straight game to a ranked opponent.

After a slow start, the Orange opened the second half with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a drive and dish from Scoop Jardine which was finished off by a dunk from 7-footer Fab Melo. Syracuse busted the game open from beyond the arc, shooting 13 for 30 - four of those 3-pointers from guard Brandon Triche.

The Eagles started hot, shooting 60 percent from the field to lead the Orange 17-16 midway through the first half. Darrell Lampley, who scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, was a handful for the Orange defense, driving the lane and shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Orange forward Kris Joseph, the Big East Player of the Week, finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Matt Balkema chipped in with nine points for the Eagles, while leading scorer J.R. Sims struggled against a big Syracuse backcourt. He shot 2-for-14 and finished with only seven points.
