Jordin Mayes scored 14 of his career-high 19 points in the second half and No. 16 Arizona survived a poor shooting night to notch a 67-59 victory over visiting Duquesne in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer on Wednesday.

Mayes scored eight consecutive Arizona points to turn a one-point advantage with under six minutes left into a nine-point lead a minute later to help the Wildcats (2-0) charge toward their 21st consecutive home victory.

Duquesne (0-1) has lost 17 straight games against ranked teams dating back to a victory over Xavier during the 1996-97 campaign.

Arizona will meet St. John's in the semifinals Nov. 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Jesse Perry had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double but Arizona shot 41.3 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers.

Eric Evans and Sean Johnson scored 13 points apiece for Duquesne, which shot only 32.8 percent.

Arizona led 49-48 before Mayes’ spurt that included two 3-pointers and two free throws. Brendon Lavender added a hoop to finish a 10-0 run and the Wildcats’ lead reached 62-50 on Perry’s three-point play with 3:27 remaining.

The Dukes rallied to within 64-59 on T.J. McConnell’s lay-up with 21.2 seconds left, but Arizona’s Kyle Fogg hit two free throws and Solomon Hill made one to seal the outcome.

Duquesne finished the first half with an 11-2 run to take a 30-28 lead at halftime. McConnell’s last-second 15-footer gave Duquesne the two-point cushion.

Arizona’s largest first-half lead was seven points at 26-19 on Perry’s three-point play with 3:20 left in the half.
