D.J. Gay scored 18 points, Malcolm Thomas added 12 and No. 7 San Diego State survived its second scare in two nights Wednesday with a 56-54 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.
Playing IUPUI for the second time this season, San Diego State improved to 14-0 for the first time in school history despite its second straight shaky performance. The Aztecs were 3 for 20 on 3-pointers, and were outrebounded 24-23.
Sophomore forward Kawhi Leonard, averaging 16.6 points per game, finished with seven points and four rebounds, and was 3 for 10 from the field.
The Aztecs have the nation's second-longest active winning streak behind No. 1 Duke's 21 straight.
IUPUI (5-8), which lost 61-46 to the Aztecs on Nov. 21, was led by Alex Young’s 19 points and eight rebounds. Stephen Thomas added 11 points, and Christian Siakam scored 10.
The Jaguars led 29-27 at halftime, but the Aztecs used a 20-5 run and led by 13 with 13:18 remaining. Tim Shelton (six points) scored with 5:55 remaining to give San Diego State a 10-point lead, but the Aztecs went scoreless for the rest of the game while IUPUI finished with an 8-0 run.
