Talor Battle scored 20 points, Jeff Brooks added 19 and the senior tandem finally found their 3-point shooting touch in leading Penn State to a 64-49 victory over Fairfield at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions were just 7 for 42 (16.7 percent) combined from 3-point range in their first two games, including a miserable 1-for-20 effort against Saint Joseph's on Tuesday night. But they'd managed to beat the Hawks in that one and Lehigh in their opener, and the Stags became the third team Penn State has held under 37 percent field-goal shooting.
Friday night Penn State hit on half of its 10 3s in the first half in gaining a 26-18 lead. Back-to-back 3s by the seniors Brooks and Battle gave Penn State a 44-29 lead with 12:52 remaining, its largest to that point – they combined to go 7 for 13 beyond the arc as the Nittany Lions went 9 for 23 on 3-pointers in the rout.
Greg Nero's nine points led the Stags, who had split their first two games, beating Sacred Heart, 62-45, before losing at Rutgers, 68-53.
This was the first meeting between the two programs.
