Freshman forward Stephen Zimmerman Jr. scored 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked four shots as UNLV, playing its first game since the resignation of head coach Dave Rice, snapped a three-game losing streak with a 86-74 Mountain West victory over New Mexico on Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
It was the sixth double-double for the 7-foot Zimmerman, who set a career high for rebounds and matched his career highs for points and blocks.
Sophomore guard Patrick McCaw led the Rebels with 18 points. Senior guard Ike Nwamu finished with 15 points, and junior forward Ben Carter and senior guard Jerome Seagears each added 10 points and for UNLV (10-7, 1-3 MW).
Sophomore guard Elijah Brown scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and guard Cullen Neal added 14 points for New Mexico (10-7, 3-1), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.
The Rebels, who did a lot more trapping and played at a faster tempo in their first game under interim coach Todd Simon, went on a 15-4 run late in the first half to go into halftime with a 34-28 lead.
McCaw, who scored just two points before intermission, sank a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points as UNLV opened the second half with a 20-9 spurt to take control.
The Rebels, who forced 14 turnovers and finished with a 24-7 edge in points off turnovers, led by as many as 22 points, 69-47, on a basket by sophomore forward Dwayne Morgan with 8:15 to go. New Mexico never got any closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
