Dirk Nowitzki scored 34 points and Monta Ellis added 20 as Dallas edged visiting Sacramento.

Jose Calderon chipped in 14 points and seven assists and Brandan Wright collected 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Mavericks. Nowitzki went 11-of-19 from the field and 11-of-11 from the line for Dallas, which committed a season-low four turnovers and won for the second time in the last five games.

Rudy Gay recorded 35 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Kings, who are still without DeMarcus Cousins due to an ankle injury. Isaiah Thomas added 19 points and six assists as Sacramento dropped its sixth straight.

The Kings managed one field goal in the first 8:18 of the fourth quarter as the Mavericks erased a six-point deficit and took an 89-87 lead on Nowitzki’s free throws with 6:54 left. Gay snapped the drought with a layup that knotted it at 92 but Sacramento never managed to get back the lead, and Ellis’ three-point play with 12 seconds left put the game away for Dallas.

The Kings trailed by five at the break but Thomas capped a 17-3 run beginning the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers to take a nine-point edge. The lead swelled to 74-61 on Thomas’ jumper with 4:50 left in the third before the Mavericks got hot and chopped the deficit to 81-75 heading into the fourth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cousins, who missed his fifth straight game, is still listed as day-to-day. … Mavericks F Shawn Marion (shoulder) missed the game and Jae Crowder collected six points and six rebounds while starting in his place. … Gay attempted a career-high 17 free throws and made a career-high 15.
