Grizzlies 96, Hornets 89: Rudy Gay matched a season high with 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting as visiting Memphis survived a scare before pulling away from slumping New Orleans.

Quincy Pondexter made all six of his shots from the field - including four 3-pointers - to finish with 16 points for Memphis. Zach Randolph had 15 points and Marc Gasol added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have won six of the last seven meetings between the clubs.

Ryan Anderson had 15 points and Brian Roberts and rookie Austin Rivers came off the bench to score the same amount for the Hornets, who have dropped 11 of their last 13 contests.

After Rivers brought the Hornets to within one at 84-83, Gay highlighted a 10-4 run with a pair of free throws and a backbreaking 3-pointer.

Gay, who has recorded at least 14 points in 20 consecutive games, also had 28 points in a 107-97 victory over Oklahoma City on Nov. 14.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Randolph recorded four of his team's 11 offensive rebounds. ... After getting outscored 30-16 and 30-13 in two of its previous third quarters, New Orleans got the better of Memphis with a 27-20 edge in the session. ... The Grizzlies held an 18-6 edge in fast-break points.
