Left-hander Tyler Gilbert threw a no-hitter in his first major league start to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-0 win against the visiting San Diego Padres on Saturday night.

Gilbert (1-1) is the fourth major-leaguer to throw a no-hitter in his first major-league start, and first since Bobo Holloman of the St. Louis Browns against the Philadelphia Athletics on May 6, 1953.

He's also the eighth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the majors this season, tying the MLB record set in 1884, the first year overhand pitching was allowed.

Gilbert, whom the Diamondbacks selected in the minor league Rule 5 draft following last season, made his big league debut on Aug. 3 and had not allowed a run in his previous 3 2/3 innings over three appearances out of the bullpen.

Gilbert struck out five and walked three.

Rookie Drew Ellis hit a three-run homer, his first long ball in the majors, in the first inning to give Gilbert some breathing room. Josh VanMeter had three hits for the Diamondbacks, who will try for their first four-game sweep of the season on Sunday.

Tommy Pham walked his first three times up, the only base runners for San Diego, and twice was erased on double plays. He lined out to center to end the game.

Padres starter Joe Musgrove (8-8) came in with a 2.81 ERA, but got off to a rough start before exiting after five innings. He matched a season high of six runs allowed, and surrendered his season-worst 10 hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Musgrove got into trouble right away, as VanMeter slammed his first pitch off the wall in right-center field for a stand-up double.

Ketel Marte hit an RBI double and David Peralta followed with a run-scoring single, before Ellis lifted a three-run homer into the seats in left-center field to make it 5-0.

Arizona tacked on a run in the fifth, getting a leadoff infield single by Pavin Smith and a run-scoring triple from Josh Rojas to make it 6-0.

VanMeter made it 7-0 with an RBI single in the sixth to drive in Nick Ahmed, who opened the inning with a double.
