Gerrit Cole struck out 11 as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium in a game shortened by rain after six innings.

Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres hit back-to-back homers off Hirokazu Sawamura (4-1) as the Yankees beat the Red Sox for the first time in eight meetings this season.

A week after striking out 12 in a complete game win at Houston, Cole (10-4) allowed one run and five hits. He walked two in a 96-pitch outing while the rain intensified throughout the game.

It was Cole's seventh double-digit strikeout game and 45th such game in the regular season. It also occurred three starts after he allowed three homers June 27 at Fenway Park.

The game featured numerous delays.

There was a 50-minute delay before the game although it did not rain and the tarp was not placed on the field. There also were four delays for replay reviews and another brief delay when a fan threw a ball at Boston left fielder Alex Verdugo.

Verdugo became irate and began yelling at the fans. Manager Alex Cora briefly pulled his team off the field as the rain intensified.

The game was delayed a second time at 10:48 p.m. as Cole took the mound to start the seventh and finally called 54 minutes later.

DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single in the fifth off Nathan Eovaldi after the Yankees were blanked for the first 13 innings of the series.

Eovaldi allowed one run on two hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Eovaldi took a no-hitter into the fifth until Greg Allen doubled with two outs. Allen scored the tying run on LeMahieu's single to left.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the second when Jarren Duran singled up the middle, advanced on a groundout and easily scored from second on Christian Arroyo's base hit.
