Ronald Torreyes hit a three-run home run and six Philadelphia Phillies pitchers scrambled to deliver a 5-4 victory over the host Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
Brandon Kintzler threw 13 pitches and allowed a solo home run in a surprise spot start after Aaron Nola, infielder Alec Bohm and relievers Connor Brogdon and Bailey Falter all landed on the COVID-related injured list earlier Sunday.
Cristopher Sanchez (1-0) gave up one run over three innings with two strikeouts to earn the win. J.T. Realmuto also drove in a run for the Phillies, who have won seven of 10 games heading into the All-Star break to reach .500 at 44-44.
Xander Bogaerts had a solo homer, while Alex Verdugo, Bobby Dalbec and Christian Arroyo each had an RBI for Boston, which has dropped five of its last eight prior to the break.
Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta (7-4) allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts over four innings against his former team. Pivetta spent his first three-plus seasons with Philadelphia before being traded to Boston in 2020.
Bogaerts led off the home half of the second inning with his 15th home run of the season to bring Kintzler's day to an end at 13 pitches.
Realmuto's two-out single in the third scored the tying and go-ahead runs for Philadelphia. Torreyes scored from second on Realmuto's hit, and Travis Jankowski scored from first after being awarded home plate when Red Sox right fielder Hunter Renfroe's throw bounced into the Phillies' dugout.
Torreyes connected for his third homer of the year in the fourth to make it 5-1. Verdugo had an RBI groundout in the fifth before Dalbec's RBI infield single and Arroyo's RBI double in the sixth pulled the Red Sox within a run.
Boston loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Verdugo grounded out to end the threat. Ranger Suarez pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and struck out four to record his second save.
