Zack Short belted a two-run homer during a five-run sixth inning and the Detroit Tigers opened their three-game series against the Texas Rangers with a 7-3 victory on Monday in Arlington, Texas.

Wily Peralta (2-1) allowed three hits with no walks and six strikeouts over seven scoreless innings for Detroit, which won its third in a row.

Texas avoided the shutout with two outs in the ninth when Joey Gallo blasted a two-run homer off Bryan Garcia and Jonah Heim followed with a home run.

The Tigers held a 1-0 lead against Rangers starter Kolby Allard (2-5) before breaking through with five runs on three hits and two errors in the sixth.

Allard's one-out walk to Robbie Grossman loaded the bases for Nomar Mazara, whose grounder was bobbled by first baseman Nate Lowe.

Two runs scored on the play on a pair of errors by Lowe, who tossed to an unattended base after collecting the ball.

Brett Martin replaced Allard and allowed Grossman to score on Willi Castro's sacrifice bunt. Short followed with a two-run shot to center field after striking out in each of his previous six at-bats, including twice earlier Monday.

Allard gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked two and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts.

The Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out and Miguel Cabrera scored from third on Mazara's groundout.

Cabrera had two hits and two runs for Detroit, which has won five of its past six. Jeimer Candelario added two hits and reached base four times.

Texas struggled to generate any offense against Peralta, who has not allowed an earned run in his last 16 2/3 innings.

The Tigers added to their lead in the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out and Grossman scored from third on Short's sacrifice fly.

Detroit center fielder Daz Cameron was scratched from the starting lineup with a sprained right big toe after crashing into the wall during batting practice.
