Johnny Cueto threw five shutout innings for the second consecutive start and Mike Yastrzemski scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a wild pitch Sunday afternoon as the San Francisco Giants edged the visiting Miami Marlins 2-1.
Mauricio Dubon homered for the Giants, who won two of three in the series.
Matching his effort from a week earlier when he was pitching for the first time in 13 months after Tommy John surgery, Cueto limited the Marlins to three hits in his five innings. He walked two and struck out two.
This time, however, the Giants didn't give him five runs of support. They gave him just one on the Dubon homer in the third inning, and Cueto, who left with a 1-0 lead, was denied a potential second win when the Marlins tied it in the seventh.
Burch Smith, the third Giants pitcher, got the first two outs in the seventh before Magneuris Sierra bunted toward third baseman Evan Longoria. Smith beat the throw for a single, then raced all the way to third when Longoria's throw went down the right field line for an error.
Jon Berti followed with a single for a 1-1 tie.
The score stood that way until the last of the eighth when Yastrzemski singled with one out against Jarlin Garcia (3-2).
After Brandon Belt singled, Garcia was replaced by Ryne Stanek, whose wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position.
Longoria drew a walk to load the bases, and when Stephen Vogt swung at a wild strike three, the ball got away from catcher Jorge Alfaro, allowing Yastrzemski to score.
The play, on which Vogt was retired for a second out, was ruled a wild pitch.
Giants closer Will Smith worked around a one-out walk to Alfaro in the ninth for his 33rd save.
Dubon's home run, his third of the season, was the only extra-base hit of the game and just the 10th of a series that featured just two homers.
Like Cueto, Marlins starter Elieser Hernandez did not get a decision after pitching well for five innings. He was charged with one run on three hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Tyler Rogers (2-0), who worked a scoreless top of the eighth, was credited with the win.
