Ketel Marte's grand slam broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and right-hander Zac Gallen gave up only one hit in seven shutout innings in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in Phoenix.

Craig Stammen (7-7) walked Carson Kelly and pinch-hitter Jake Lamb with one out in the seventh before Jarrod Dyson squibbed a single down the third base line off reliever Luis Perdomo to load the bases, bringing up Marte.

Marte has 30 homers, and he is hitting a major league-best .386 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs since June 15. He also had two singles and leads the NL in hits (173) and multiple-hit games (55).

Gallen (3-4) lost his no-hitter when Manny Machado lined a hard single to right field with one out in the seventh inning. He struck out eight and walked one.

Wil Myers hit a pinch-hit homer to lead off the ninth inning off T.J. McFarland, and after a Josh Naylor single, Archie Bradley entered for his 12th save, all since July 30.

Gallen, obtained from Miami at the trade deadline, became the third pitcher in NL history to give up three or fewer earned runs in his first 13 appearances. Steve Rogers (18) and Pedro Astacio (13) are the others.

Arizona has won nine of 10 and 12 of 16 to move three games behind the idle Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot. The Diamondbacks (73-67) are six games over .500 for the first time since May 9.

San Diego rookie right-hander Chris Paddack gave up four hits in 5 1/3 innings, leaving after singles by Marte and Eduardo Escobar in the sixth inning before Stammen got out of the inning. Paddack struck out eight and walked two.

San Diego had three base runners in the first five innings -- Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch to open the game, Machado reached when Wilmer Flores dropped his popup in the fourth inning and Eric Hosmer walked in the fifth -- although Gallen only faced the minimum.

Garcia, who went from first to third on a groundout into a shift, was thrown out at home attempting to score on a fly out to left field, Machado was caught stealing and Hosmer was erased on a double play.
