Meibrys Viloria drove home Alex Gordon with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon.
Viloria's key hit came after Gordon had driven in Adalberto Mondesi with the tying run. Whit Merrifield's home run in the eighth gave the Royals an insurance run.
Mondesi matched a career high with four hits after being activated from the 10-day injured list earlier Sunday. He also stole three bases after missing the previous 41 games with a left shoulder subluxation.
Kevin McCarthy (3-2) picked up the win for the Royals with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances, including 23 of his last 24.
Paul Fry (1-7) took the loss after being charged with a run while failing to record an out.
In his return from the injured list, Royals left-hander Danny Duffy gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
The Orioles scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Renato Nunez, driving in Hanser Alberto, who led off with a single. Alberto is hitting .414 (75-for-181) against lefties this season.
The Royals answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The first two runs scored on Hunter Dozier's two-run double. Mondesi got the rally started with a single, followed by a walk to Jorge Soler. Dozier scored on Ryan O'Hearn's RBI single. The Royals left the bases loaded in the inning.
The Orioles' Trey Mancini tied the score in the third with a two-run single. Richie Martin led off with a soft single, followed by Alberto's double down the left-field line and Mancini's single to right.
Baltimore took the lead in the sixth when Jonathan Villar beat a throw home on a ground ball by Pedro Severino to second base with the infield in. Villar reached on a one-out single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Viloria at catcher.
