J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning and the Boston Red Sox recorded a 9-5 victory over the suddenly slumping New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox won their third straight over the Yankees and for the 15th time in their last 22 games overall. The Yankees dropped their third straight and lost for the fifth time in seven games as their lead in the AL East fell to eight games over Boston.
The Red Sox rallied from a pair of early one-run deficits and went ahead with a three-run fourth off CC Sabathia (5-6) and padded their lead with a three-run sixth off Chad Green.
Martinez put Boston in front 3-2 when he hammered Sabathia's first-pitch cutter over the left-field fence for his 22nd homer. The Red Sox followed Martinez's homer with two singles and took a 4-2 lead on a single by rookie Michael Chavis.
Andrew Benintendi hit a solo homer in the second on a ball that was initially called a double but overturned via replay. Xander Bogaerts contributed an RBI double in the fifth that knocked out Sabathia and gave Boston a 5-3 lead.
The Red Sox extended their lead to 8-3 in the sixth on an RBI triple by Jackie Bradley Jr. sandwiched around sacrifice flies by Brock Holt and Mookie Betts. Sam Travis added an RBI single in the seventh.
Eduardo Rodriguez (13-4) won his fifth straight start, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out five, walked three and threw 108 pitches.
Rodriguez exited with two on in the sixth and Matt Barnes ended it by striking out Kyle Higashioka. Barnes also pitched a scoreless seventh. Nathan Eovaldi struck out Aaron Hicks after allowing a two-run single to Higashioka in the eighth and Brandon Workman pitched a perfect ninth.
Gio Urshela went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Yankees. He hit his 11th homer in the second and then gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a single in the fourth.
Edwin Encarnacion added an RBI double in the fifth.
Sabathia allowed five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He remained stuck on 251 career victories and it was the seventh straight time a Yankee starting pitcher did not complete five innings.
The Yankees played without DJ LeMahieu, who was scratched with groin tightness and headed for an MRI.
