Ramon Laureano roped a run-scoring double down the third base line in the 11th inning, and the Oakland Athletics pulled out a 4-3 victory over the host Houston Astros on Tuesday.
The Athletics tied the three-game set at a win apiece with their rally against Astros right-hander Collin McHugh (3-5). Houston had its six-game winning streak snapped after Laureano drove home Matt Olson, who reached on a one-out single and took second on a walk to Mark Canha.
Yusmeiro Petit (3-2) earned the win for Oakland. He pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Oakland trailed 2-0 going to the top of the ninth, but Olson slugged an 0-2 fastball from Astros closer Roberto Osuna out to right for a three-run home run. His 21st long ball of the season scored Marcus Semien (walk) and Matt Chapman (single).
Osuna's blown save negated the stellar effort of Astros starter Wade Miley. The left-hander hadn't pitched more than seven innings in any of his prior 20 starts this year yet returned for the ninth with a pitch count of 98 to face the top of the Oakland order. Miley was pulled with Olson coming to the plate.
The Astros, however, got even with a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Aledmys Diaz drove in pinch runner Myles Straw with a sacrifice fly to right field off Oakland right-hander Joakim Soria.
Miley carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and didn't allow his first baserunner until Josh Phegley's one-out single to left.
In the seventh, Miley gave up a leadoff walk but got Olson to ground into a double play. Canha and Laureano followed with singles before Miley retired Khris Davis, who represented the go-ahead run, on a grounder.
In eight-plus innings, Miley allowed two runs, four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Athletics right-hander Mike Fiers nearly matched Miley inning for inning, but one critical mistake by Laureano in center field enabled the Astros to grab the lead in the bottom of the second.
With Michael Brantley on third base following his leadoff single and advancement via a groundout and wild pitch, Yuli Gurriel stroked a low liner that eluded the diving Laureano and rolled to the outfield wall.
Gurriel, who set a new single-season mark with his 19th home run on Monday, circled the bases and scored ahead of the throw to the plate for an inside=the-park home run and a 2-0 lead.
Fiers, who entered play 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA dating back to his May 7 no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds, rolled from that point until departing with two outs in the eighth.
He allowed a one-out double to Brantley in the third before retiring 13 consecutive batters. Catcher Max Stassi tried to stretch a two-out single into a double and was erased at second base to close the seventh.
Fiers gave up two runs on six hits and two walks over 7 2/3 innings. He recorded three strikeouts.
