The New York Mets awakened from a two-night hitting slumber with four home runs Saturday afternoon, ending the host San Francisco Giants' seven-game winning streak with an 11-4 romp.
Dominic Smith, Jeff McNeil, Todd Frazier and Pete Alonso homered for New York, which had totaled just two runs in 26 innings in 3-2 and 1-0 losses to open the series.
Right-hander Walker Lockett (1-1), promoted from Triple-A earlier in the day, benefited from the power surge to record his first major league win.
Smith, whose error in left field allowed the only run of Friday's game to score in the 10th inning, blasted a solo home run, his 10th, in the second inning. He added an RBI single after a Frazier triple in the fourth, as the Mets jumped on Giants starter Jeff Samardzija (7-8) for a 2-0 lead.
McNeil's two-run shot, his ninth of the year, in the fifth made it 4-0.
Samardzija, who had won all three of his previous July starts, was lifted for a pinch hitter after working five innings. He was charged with four runs and six hits, striking out seven without allowing a walk.
Joe Panik, pinch hitting for Samardzija, got the Giants within 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out RBI single.
But then the Mets busted the game open off Derek Holland in the sixth, with Frazier ripping a solo home run and Alonso, pinch hitting for Lockett, hitting a three-run blast to increase the lead to 8-1. The homers were No. 13 for Frazier and No. 33 for Alonso, who now has 75 RBIs, breaking a Mets rookie record that Darryl Strawberry held with 74 in 1983, his first season with the club.
Lockett, who entered the game with an 11.74 ERA in two outings with the Mets, earned the win by giving up just one run and five hits in five innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. The 25-year-old had been 0-4 in his two-year career.
Smith completed a four-RBI day with a two-run single that highlighted a three-run ninth. Alex Dickerson hit a two-run homer, his fifth, and Mike Yastrzemski had a solo shot, his eighth, to complete the scoring in the bottom of the inning.
Amed Rosario and J.D. Davis had three hits apiece, and Frazier scored three runs for the Mets, who improved to 5-3 on a nine-game trip.
Pablo Sandoval went 4-for-4 for the Giants, whose loss was just the third in their last 17 games.
