Hunter Renfroe hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning and Eric Lauer pitched six strong innings as the visiting San Diego Padres ended their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a game that was played through a strong earthquake.
With the Dodgers' Enrique Hernandez at the plate in the fourth inning, an earthquake centered just over 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles began shaking Dodger Stadium. Hernandez's at-bat continued uninterrupted, although both foul poles swayed and the live broadcast shook through the center-field camera shot.
Lauer gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts, and continues to have success against the Dodgers. He not only took a no-hitter into the fifth inning when he faced Los Angeles on May 3, he is now 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA against the Dodgers in five career starts.
Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings with one walk and nine strikeouts as the Dodgers saw their nine-game home winning streak come to an end. Kershaw ended up with a no-decision, but it was the first time the Dodgers lost a home game started by Kershaw since August 13 of last season -- ending a streak of 11 straight starts.
The Padres grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the third inning against Kershaw, getting an RBI double from Eric Hosmer and a run-scoring groundout from former Dodger Manny Machado.
The Dodgers got one of the runs back in their half of the third inning against Lauer on an RBI single from Chris Taylor. Los Angeles tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning when Alex Verdugo scored on Max Muncy's grounder to first base, with Hosmer's throw home off-target.
Renfroe broke the tie in the eighth with a two-out shot to left field against Dodgers right-hander Yimi Garcia (1-3). It was Renfroe's 26th home run of the season, giving him the team lead over Franmil Reyes.
The Padres called on closer Kirby Yates with one out in the eighth inning. It was the All-Star's 28th save of the season and first five-out save on the year, although he hit Russell Martin in the helmet with two outs in the ninth inning. Martin remained in the game.
Yates' only other outing of more than one inning came last Friday when he recorded a four-out save against the St. Louis Cardinals. Craig Stammen (6-4) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
