Gunnar Henderson homered, Grayson Rodriguez pitched 5 2/3 innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the visiting New York Yankees 2-0 on Monday night.
Rodriguez (4-1) gave up five hits. The right-hander struck out three and walked three, throwing 101 pitches in the first meeting of the season between the teams.
After scoring 15 runs in each of their past two games, the Yankees were shut out on seven hits. New York had at least one baserunner in every inning except the eighth but went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Yankee starter Clarke Schmidt (2-1) was almost as good. He allowed one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out five and walking three.
New York's Gleyber Torres lined a single to center leading off the ninth against Yennier Cano. With Craig Kimbrel unavailable, Danny Coulombe came on and retired three straight hitters for his first save.
Leading off the bottom of the first, Henderson lined a 2-2 knuckle curve over the scoreboard in right for his 10th home run of the season.
Henderson was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth. Adley Rutschman singled him to second and Henderson went to third on a fly to right. Yankees closer Clay Holmes came to face Anthony Santander, who grounded a ball up the middle that shortstop Anthony Volpe booted, allowing Santander to be safe at first with Henderson scoring to make it 2-0.
Volpe walked and Juan Soto singled with one out in the third, but Rodriguez fanned Aaron Judge and got Anthony Rizzo to ground out.
The Orioles had runners on first and second with one out in the fifth. They advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, but Schmidt retired Ramon Urias and Henderson.
Giancarlo Stanton walked with one out in the New York sixth. After a forceout, Torres singled to put runners on first and second. Cionel Perez replaced Rodriguez and got Oswaldo Cabrera on a groundout to end the inning.
