Yan Gomes' RBI single in the ninth inning Friday night lifted the host Washington Nationals to a 1-0 win over the New York Mets.

The Nationals have won a season-high five straight games. The Mets, who were limited to two hits Friday and haven't scored in the last 21 innings, have lost two straight for the first time since June 3-4 at San Diego.

Juan Soto led off the ninth by working an eight-pitch walk against Edwin Diaz (1-2). With Soto running on the pitch, he went to third on Ryan Zimmerman's full-count single.

Gomes then ripped a 2-2 pitch down the third base line for his fifth career walk-off RBI.

Brad Hand (4-2) needed just six pitches to throw a perfect top of the ninth.

Neither starter factored into the decision despite their best efforts of the season.

Mets left-hander Joey Lucchesi allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five over 5 1/3 innings -- his longest outing since he tossed six innings for the San Diego Padres against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 26, 2019.

The Mets defense provided support for Lucchesi, who induced an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the third and another inning-ending double play in the fourth.

Lucchesi exited with two on in the sixth before Miguel Castro got Zimmerman to hit into a double play

Nationals right-hander Erick Fedde allowed just two hits -- a one-out single by Dominic Smith in the fourth and a leadoff single by Luis Guillorme in the fifth -- while issuing four walks and striking out six over seven innings.

The Mets didn't get a runner beyond first until the seventh, when Smith drew a leadoff walk and went to second on Billy McKinney's groundout. After Guillorme was intentionally walked, Tomas Nido grounded out to third for the final out.
