Frankie Montas allowed two runs and five hits in a season-high seven innings to help the Oakland Athletics to their fifth straight win, a 6-4 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.
Montas (7-6) struck out eight and walked one in the middle game of the three-game series. The A's will try for the sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
Sean Murphy homered and Elvis Andrus had two doubles and two RBIs for Oakland.
Shohei Ohtani blasted his 18th homer of the season, and Jared Walsh hit his 15th for the Angels.
Los Angeles starter Andrew Heaney (4-4) went five innings, allowing three runs and five hits, striking out six and walking one.
Heaney was removed with the score tied 2-2 after giving up a single to Matt Olson to lead off the sixth. Steve Cishek entered and walked the next two batters to load the bases.
Seth Brown pinch-hit for Stephen Piscotty and lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the A's a 3-2 lead. Andrus then hit a line drive into the left-center field gap to score two more runs and make it 5-2.
Ohtani hit a solo home run in the eighth, a shot that an exit velocity of 115.8 mph, but Murphy got the run back with a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to make it 6-3.
Walsh led off the ninth with a homer off Yusmeiro Petit to trim the lead to 6-4.
Both teams put their leadoff batters on base in the third and both scored.
Justin Upton drove in Juan Lagares with a single for the Angels, and Mark Canha tied it 1-1 with a double that scored Tony Kemp.
Matt Chapman then drove in Canha with an RBI single to left for a 2-1 lead.
The Angels put runners on first and third with one out in the fifth, setting up an RBI single by David Fletcher to tie the score 2-2.
It was the seventh hit in 10 at-bats for Fletcher, who came in hitting .347 in his career against Oakland.
The Angels played without 2019 major league RBI leader Anthony Rendon, who sustained a mild triceps strain in the 8-5 loss to the A's on Monday.
