Jose Iglesias hit a grand slam in a 10-run second inning and the Cincinnati Reds went on to an 11-6 win against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of their three-game series on Monday night.
Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez had three hits each and Votto also drove in two runs for the Reds, who handed the Pirates their ninth consecutive loss, their longest losing streak since dropping 10 in a row from July 29 to Aug. 7, 2011.
Scooter Gennett and Jesse Winker added two hits each for Cincinnati and Winker also scored twice.
Reds starter Sonny Gray (6-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and six hits. He struck out three and walked one during his 89-pitch outing.
Jordan Lyles was scheduled to start for the Pirates, but was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers earlier in the day for a minor league pitcher.
Alex McRae (0-3) made the first start of his major league career instead and allowed seven runs (five earned) and six hits in 1 1/3 innings. He walked two and didn't record a strikeout.
Colin Moran hit a grand slam, and Starling Marte and Bryan Reynolds had solo shots for the Pirates, who fell to 2-15 since the All-Star break.
After the Pirates took a 1-0 lead on Marte's first-inning homer, every player in the starting lineup scored for the Reds in the second inning, and leadoff hitter Josh VanMeter scored twice.
VanMeter and Gennett started the inning with back-to-back doubles.
Tucker Barnhart and Votto sandwiched RBI singles around consecutive walks to Gray and Winker.
Pirates reliever Montana DuRapau entered and walked in a run before giving up the grand slam to Iglesias to make it 10-1.
The Pirates had not allowed double-digit runs in an inning since giving up 13 in the fourth inning of a 15-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 11, 2010.
Reynolds homered in the fifth, and Moran connected on his third major league grand slam in the sixth, drawing the Pirates within 11-6.
